Happy Stand Up Week 🏳️‍🌈

Our school is beautifully decorated this week for Stand-Up Week 2024. This nationwide week-long event is aimed at encouraging post-primary schools to take a stand against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying among young people.

The Safe and Supportive Schools (SASS) Committee who meet regularly throughout the year, are running a poster competition. The theme for the poster competition is: 'Everyone is welcome in CCM'. These students are ambassadors for diversity and inclusion in our school.

On Wednesday, the group went on a trip as part of Stand-Up Week, to celebrate all of their hard work throughout the year. We walked to Diamond Bowl in town where friendships were formed and solidified during some really competitive bowling. A great day was had by all. Other events this week included an LGBTQ+ quiz at lunchtime on Thursday and a Bake Sale at break and lunch time on Friday.

Well done to the SASS students for all of their hard work this week. We hope everyone enjoyed Stand Up Week 🏳️‍🌈

GR8 2B YNG TY Walk

Just before the mid-term break, all students from TY had the chance to take part in the GR8 2B YNG walk along the Murrough. This is part of a wellness programme which aims to help young people to understand and take charge of their own mental health. While the weather might not have been the most welcoming, students were in great form and seemed to enjoy the morning – as well as the healthy snacks provided by the Gr8 team afterwards!

'Fighting Words' Workshop

A number of TY students participated in a creative writing workshop in Wicklow Library on Tuesday, 5 November. The workshop was organised by 'Fighting Words', an organisation that was founded by the writer, Roddy Doyle, whose aim is to promote creativity and writing as a fun and powerful means of self-expression. The workshop allowed the students to bring out their latent creativity by engaging in brainstorming ideas before moulding them into stories. The students were encouraged to finish writing the stories they were working on and to send them to the organisers. The best stories will then be chosen for publication in a special Irish Times supplement that will be published next spring.

LCA Enterprise – Visit from Entrepreneur Lisa Cunnigham

6 Eske met with Local Enterprise Office representative Lisa Cunningham on Thursday, 7 November, for their key assignment for Enterprise 3. Lisa spoke about her experiences as an entrepreneur and how the Local Enterprise Office supports new entrepreneurs in the Wicklow area. Lisa gave examples of businesses in the area she has supported and worked with, and the students were given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

TY Trip to AvCon 2024 (Careers in the Aviation Industry)

On Thursday, 7 November, all Transition Year students attended the 'AvCon Future of Aviation event' hosted by the Air Corps at their Dublin base in Baldonnel. The event was held to inspire the next generation of aviators, engineers, and innovators. At the event there was a stellar line-up of guest speakers, including aero engineers, pilots, technicians and air traffic controllers from the Air Corps. Their insights and experiences highlighted the importance of collaboration and mentorship in aviation.

For the students attending, this convention offered an unparalleled opportunity to learn from the best, view and engage with cutting-edge technology, and envision a future where their dreams could take flight. They had the opportunity to attend hands-on workshops, interactive exhibits and panel discussions which were designed to ignite their curiosity and foster a passion for aviation.

This event highlighted for the students the importance of choosing STEM subjects for the Leaving Certificate, subjects which can then help them to gain entry to their desired career path. After attending this event, students may now choose an aviation-focused career path, something which they may never have considered before.

Senior Girls’ Soccer

On Monday, 4 November, our Senior Girls’ Soccer team travelled to Wexford to take on Loreto Secondary School, Wexford, to play in the Senior Girls’ Cup. Loreto started strong and took the lead early on in the first half and continued to put on a strong display. CCM fought hard in the game, with Kirsten Hart netting four goals in the match.

Unfortunately, the game didn't go the girls’ way but a big shout-out to Kirsten Hart, Kelly Kavanagh, Millie Phelan, Amy Musiol and Kayla Renwick who put in a great performance during the game. Best wishes to Loreto Wexford as they progress in the competition.
