History

We are delighted to welcome you to our school website. This website will become a portal for the school and the wider community to access information and gain appreciation for the educational aspirations of our school. The academic school year 2011-12 was a historic and memorable year in the delivery of education to Wicklow and its hinterland. Through the partnership of County Wicklow Vocational Education Committee and the Archdiocese of Dublin the amalgamation of Abbey Community College and De La Salle College was brought to fruition; a new Designated Community College for Wicklow was established. On the 29th August Coláiste Chill Mhantáin welcomed students through its doors for the first time.

Initially our school operated on two campuses (Abbey CC & De La Salle College), However, on 17thOctober 2011 our state of the art facility was populated by staff and students. It was on this date that our school community of 694 students and 62 teachers first experienced teaching and learning in our wonderful new building; a building, a process and amalgamation that has surpassed all expectations.

The school building is set against the backdrop of the beautiful Wicklow Hills and the unique coastal views of Wicklow Bay. This is a panoramic location and the building nestles beautifully into the landscape while still reflecting the architect’s concept for the building. Our school crest echoes both the setting and the vision for Coláiste Chill Mhantáin. The image of two people travelling together on a boat conjures up a sense of togetherness, purpose and friendship. The crest captures a sense of our location and certainly reflects a positive image of our school and the community it represents.

At this pivotal point in the educational landscape of Wicklow one is reminded of the significant contribution both Abbey Community College and De La Salle College made to this community. It is important to acknowledge the emotional link the community has with both amalgamating schools; the memories, the loyalty, the sense of ownership and belonging. However, Coláiste Chill Mhantáin remains committed to developing and sustaining a school of excellence and success where the promotion of courtesy, respect, and responsibility will be key values of our School Plan.
