TY WorldSkills Trip

On Wednesday, 25 September, five classes of Transition Year Students from CCM attended the 2024 WorldSkills Ireland careers event at the RDS in Dublin. This event provides students with a unique opportunity to experience first-hand what a skill-based future could look like. At the event, the students saw over 160 finalists compete across 30 live national competition finals, in a broad range of career areas spanning from electrics to cyber security to hairdressing and beauty. In addition to watching the top skills-based apprentices in the country compete for the national winning titles, the CCM TY students had the opportunity to sample a number of career areas themselves, by using virtual headsets to gain more insight into what it would be like to work in a number of the areas, as well as the opportunity to speak with companies who employ apprentices to learn more about what they need to become an apprentice with a company, should they wish to choose an apprenticeship-based career path in the future.

A video of the trip has been posted on the 'CCM Whole School Guidance & Careers' Facebook & Instagram pages - https://fb.watch/uQI4xryXU8/

TY Speakers on Blindness & Vision Impairment

Stuart Lawler and Sharon Lyons from Sight and Sound Technology gave a very engaging talk to Transition Students last week. Stuart, who is blind from birth, described growing up (learning to ride a bicycle) and daily experiences (how not to mix up colours putting on a clothes wash, making tea, how he dreams) for a person with blindness.

Stuart and Sharon discussed braille, pharmaceutical packing and its importance. The students also had the opportunity to write a short audio description script for a movie scene which can make the actions in film more understandable to people with blindness.

Finally, students were shown how technology and AI can make learning and daily life easier for people with vision impairment – including iPhones, websites, braille laptops, sight goggles, audio devices and projectors.

Stuart and Sharon are pictured showing some of these technologies to students.

Leaving Certificate Geography Fieldtrip
Leaving Certificate Geography fieldwork took place on Tuesday, 1st October, at Ballymoney Beach, Co Wexford. The class enjoyed fine Autumn sunshine and ideal conditions to collect data on costal transport and deposition which forms the basis for their leaving certificate projects this year. Students conducted a wave study and a beach study as part of their 20% Leaving Cert project.

The day was enjoyed by all, and the students gained first-hand experience of coastal processes by gathering data in an ideal environment.

Wicklow Gaol Presentation

Popular children's author, Carmel Kelly, gave a talk on the history of Wicklow Gaol in the school library on Wednesday, 2 October. Carmel has just published a children’s book on the Gaol and is currently promoting it in schools around Wicklow.

Carmel used a slide presentation to talk about the history of the Gaol and also read some passages from the book. At the end of the presentation, students were given time to ask questions.

TY Photography Trip

On Thursday, 3 October, TY5 took a trip to Dublin for the 'InstaTours' Dublin Sightseeing Tour. Led by Maya, a professional photographer, the students explored some of Dublin's most Instagrammable spots, including Temple Bar and St. Stephen's Green. They learned valuable photography techniques, such as using portrait mode, capturing reflections and experimenting with poses and angles. The result was a collection of stunning photographs. This tour was a fantastic way to conclude the photography module, combining creativity with hands-on experience.

Girls’ Basketball

The U16 and U19 CCM Girls Basketball teams got their league underway against two very strong Dominican College teams. The U19 girls were up first and although they were under pressure from the start, they never gave up. There were some great performances from Millie Phelan, Molly Higgins, Laura Fitzgerald and Caitlin Power.

The U16s started well and ended the first quarter only one basket behind. The girls worked really well in defence and kept a low score till half-time. However Dominican pushed on in the second half and won the game well in the end. There were great performances from so many of the U16s; Kayla Anne Hill, Kayla Kearney, Tonya Kayembe, Kate Byrne, Hannah Wynne and Megan Forsyth.

Junior Rugby

The Junior Rugby started their season with a warm up game in Pres Bray against their Junior Bs. In tough conditions, CCM went into a 17 - 0 lead with Olly Quinn (2) and Oisin Dunne scoring the tries with Alex Healy adding one conversion. Pres fought back to level the scores in the second half at 17-all, but James Gurrie touched down to start the season with a win. Overall, this was a good performance with six players playing their first game of rugby.

Second Year Boys’ South Leinster

The Second year boys played round two of their South Leinster campaign on Tuesday, 1st October, and came away with another impressive win on a scoreline of 7-11 to 5-7 against the very strong Cross and Passion College from Kilcullen. The game opened with CCM trailing to an early goal to no score but excellent points from Failim Redmond, Jack Madden, Rian Ward, Daniel and Luke Connolly, Alex Healy and Sam Czwalina saw them lead 7 points to 1-1 after the first quarter. CCM added three excellent goals before half time with Tommy Morrisey (2) and Ben O Leary hitting the net. Half-time score CCM 4-7 Kilcullen 2-3.

Cross and Passion College were the better team for the open quarter of the second half and reduced the gap to 3 points with ten minutes to play. Some great defending from Alex McKenna, Harry Messit and Jayden McGovern kept CCM in the game. Some excellent goal kicks from Jayden Healy set CCM on their way in the last five minutes and scores from the excellent Rian Ward , the Connolly brothers and Alex Mernagh saw CCM win on a scoreline of 7-11 to 5-7.

Well done to all players and subs on the day on what was an all-round excellent team performance. Up next is the final group game versus Tyndell College from Carlow in CCM -date TBC.

U16 and U19Boys Basketball 🏀

Both our U16s and U19s Boys basketball teams travelled to St. Gerard’s on Thursday, 3 October, to play their first group match. It was good to get the lads back on the courts and both teams were up for the challenge.

Up first were our U16s who won 26- 21 with our top scorer Conor Kang scoring a massive 15 points on the day while being supported by all his teammates.

Our U19s took to the court then and displayed some superb rebounding by Seth Hogan, Cameron Little and Matteo Loueko Nkenzo to allow another win for CCM. Well done all.
