Midterm Break

We wish you all a very happy and peaceful Halloween break and we look forward to seeing you all again on Monday, 4th November!

Maths Week

Last week, 14-18 October, we celebrated Maths Week with a range of activities to promote Maths here in Colaiste Chill Mhantain. This year, we hoped to shine a light on the wide range of careers that use Maths on a day-to-day basis, with each teacher finding time to reflect on numeracy in their subject during the week. Students participated in a Daily Puzzle every morning, as well as playing Sudoku, puzzles, riddles and matchstick games throughout the day. Junior students engaged in the Math Olympiad and Maggie Gough Problem-Solving Competitions. On Thursday, First year students participated in a Maths Quiz while Second year students followed a Maths Trail around the school. Lunchtime activities included the Tower Challenge and spaghetti and marshmallow building, while online activities included Maths TV and online games.

The First Year Maths Quiz winners, Jack Collins, Charlie Lawlor, Cian Foley and Raphael Nessim, are pictured below with their teacher, Ms McDonald. Well done to all!

SOLAS - Apprenticeship Ireland

(https://www.apprenticeship.ie/) and 'SUIR Engineering' (https://suireng.ie/),

On Tuesday, 15 October, Paul Cremmins delivered a very insightful and real-life based presentation covering the career and progression opportunities available to those who apply for one of the many apprenticeships offered by Apprenticeship Ireland & SUIR Engineering. Sixth, Fifth, Transition and Third year students learned about the extensive range of apprenticeships on offer by Apprenticeship Ireland, inclusive of the new emerging apprenticeships in areas such as Digital Marketing. Paul advised on the importance of Maths as a subject, and he showed students a table of mathematical formulas and explained how students need to be able to apply their understanding of maths to real work-based problems. He also stressed the importance of science subjects - physics in particular - in a number of the apprenticeship areas. He spoke to the students about the importance of having a skill, and how having a skillset enables one to have employment opportunities both nationally and internationally. Regarding the National Apprenticeship Scheme, he spoke in-depth about the college aspect of the Apprenticeship Programme and he stressed the educational content that is covered in the college element of the programme, and the need to pass the exams. He advised of how the apprenticeship credit system can be used to advance one's career into other areas, therefore enabling ongoing career progression from entering at Level 5 Post-Leaving Cert, to exiting with a Level 9 at Masters level should one wish to progress.

Go Quest

Last Week the Transition Year students travelled to Go Quest. They engaged in interactive problem solving and challenging obstacle courses. The students demonstrated exemplary behaviour throughout the day which was commented on by staff. From the moment we arrived, they exhibited respect towards staff and collaborated effectively in teams, two teams just missing out on a coveted position on the all-time leader board.

Orienteering Ireland

Third year students all headed off to Cabinteely Park on Thursday, 24 October. It was a beautiful Autumn day. They had to complete an orienteering course set up by Orienteering Ireland as their task for the PE CBA. They used a chip timing system which also clocked how many control-points they found. All students took part with great enthusiasm. Justin Ivants and Anthony Kleinbooi were first back and found all the control points, within the 45 minutes time allocation. Mary from Orienteering Ireland commended the group on their energy and behaviour. The students will now write up a reflection, to complete their CBA. Well done Third year students!

Junior Hurling

CCM 2-10 Dunlavin 5-9
CCM Junior hurlers travelled to Dunlavin for Round 2 of the South Leinster competition. Against the breeze in the first half, and in heavy ground conditions, the lads were unlucky to concede three goals in the first half and were eight points down at half-time. However, Captain John Lynch and Nathan Duffy Gough at midfield led a great comeback in the second half. There were great performances from Alex McKenna who moved to midfield and Danny McCoy and Sean O’Brien in the backs. Cillian Cwazlina scored four points in the forwards and CCM narrowed the gap to four points. Unfortunately, Dunlavin managed to get another two goals to keep them in front. Tommy Morrisey and Aiden Kelly got the goals for CCM. Well done to all the lads on a battling performance and to Fifth Year students for helping out.

Wicklow Post Primary Cross Country
On Tuesday, 22 October, CCM students took part in the Wicklow Post Primary Cross Country in Avondale. Over a testing 1500m course, there were great performances all round. Summer Fitzsimons placed second in the First year girls’ race. Shane Doyle medalled in the Second year boys’ race and added to this when our Second year boys team came second overall. Shane was closely followed over the line by Ben O'Leary, Failim Redmond and Leon Lawless. Aoibhe Mitchell medalled in the senior girls’ race. Well done to all students who competed on the day.
