NZEB Rig
The Construction Studies Department accommodated an NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) rig visit to the school this week. The rig, a full-sized articulated aorry taking up approximately ten parking spaces, arrived on Monday, 16th September, and stayed all week until Friday.
The Sixth Year Construction Studies students completed their first session in the NZEB rig on Tuesday, 17 September. Students completed many practical activities such as applying air tight tape to a wall and using a VR Headset to install a window into a house and make the window airtight. The rig provided a great learning experience for them that will aid them in their Leaving Certificate Exam.
The Wicklow Branch of the Technoteachers Association met this week for what turned out to be a very informative NZEB training session. Attendees were shown around the NZEB training rig, followed by a demonstration on applying airtightness tape around windows and using VR headsets to install a window to NZEB standards.
Leinster Senior Girls GAA
On Monday, 16 September, our Senior girls team set out on a warm morning against Coláiste an Átha in Wexford. From the throw-in, midfielders Kayla and Freya Renwick won the ball, carrying it down the pitch to Kate Byrne who scored a fantastic opening point. Freya and Kayla Renwick, along with Millie Phelan, Lily Neville, Reece Hughes, Brooke Byrne and Nicole Peterson added more scores to the board. Coláiste an Átha forwards put a great effort in the second half, but Layla Whelan, Kelly Kavanagh and Grainne Murphy were too strong in our defence. It was a fantastic overall team effort by all the girls. Well done!
Ultimate Frisbee Report
On Tuesday, February 17, CCM hosted John Scottus on a fine sunny day for Ultimate Frisbee. Thirty-seven students were selected to represent the school in the Open, Girls and Mixed divisions. With the weather on our side, the students played beautiful Ultimate - focusing on sensible short passes and choosing wisely when to take the long shots. Although they were a bit loose on their defence at the start and suffered a few punishing scores from the other side, CCM managed to tighten up and shut down the JS offense.
In the end, CCM won five out of their six matches on the day with a considerable gap in the scorelines. The final match, a Junior/Senior Boys’ match, saw CCM go 3-0 down after a focused JS start. However, the lads changed up their defence and clawed it back to within one by the buzzer.
Well done to everyone who was out today and we're looking forward to seeing our new First years out at the next tournament in November.
Second Year Boys’ South Leinster Competition
On Wednesday morning, 18 September, the Second Year Boys travelled to face Dunlavin in the first round of the South Leinster competition. The lads trailed 3 points to no score before a scoring burst saw them score 2-3 without reply to lead 3-3 to 5 points at half time. Some excellent defending from Failim Redmond, Luke Connolly and great saves from Josh Smullen kept CCM in the game and, at the other end, excellent scores from Alex Mernagh, Alex Healy, Luke and Daniel Connolly kept CCM in front.
The lads kicked on in the second half and added some great team scores, the pick of them a great point from wing-back, Harry Bowen, and a goal from Sam Czwalina.
CCM (5-8) ran out winners on the day to a very good Dunlavin team who scored 2-6.
An excellent team performance from all involved with special mentions to Failim Redmond, Luke Connolly, Josh Smullen, Daniel Connolly and Alex Healy. We now play Tyndall College Carlow and Cross and Passion Kilcullen in the remaining group games, both of which are in CCM in the coming weeks.
South Leinster Hurling Championship
CCM came up against tough opposition from Presentation College/Gaelcholaiste Carlow in the first round of the South Leinster championship on Friday, 20 September. Against the breeze in the first half, scores were hard to come by and, despite their best efforts, CCM were trailing at the break 2-09 to 0-3.
The lads managed to reduce the deficit in the second half with good scores including a goal from a penalty and points by Harry Butler, Cillian Czwalina and Nathan Duffy Gough. However, the gap was too great to bridge and the Carlow keeper made a fine save from John Lynch to deny CCM another much-needed goal. Ben Currie, Joseph Clancy and Rory Grove worked hard in the full back line and Danny McCoy had an outstanding game at half back. Final score was 3-13 to 1-10.
