Art Installation – Welcome to CCM

Last Friday, 21 March, our art mural was installed and is symbolic of our local area; an area that CCM is proud to service by providing opportunities to the young people in the area. This mural was designed following Art Department consultation with teachers, students and the artist, Julie Potter. The mural echoes the theme of “Connection, My Place & Welcome” and focuses on connection with our community with images to represent Wicklow, Rathnew, Glenealy and the dominance of the Sugar Loaf in the Wicklow skyline. Many thanks to all involved in bringing this teaching and learning initiative to fruition and to KWETB for their support of the project through their teaching and learning grant which CCM received following a review of the proposal. Well done everyone!

European Money Quiz

F49 was a hive of activity on Tuesday morning, 25 March, with over 120 business students from First to Third year taking part in the European Money Quiz. Students from schools all over Ireland took place in this online quiz run by the Banking & Payments Federation of Ireland. This year over 1300 teams took part. Great competition ensued as students worked in pairs to answer questions ranging from the current Minister for Finance, VAT, inflation to savings calculations.

Having placed 2nd and 3rd in the two previous years’ competitions, Third year students, Ashwin Murali and Ajay Heywood, won overall for CCM, coming in 79th place from the 1300 teams taking part nationwide. First year students, Cian Foley and Rian Cahillane, were in 2nd place for CCM and 111th place nationwide while Third year students, Harry Butler and Daragh Cullen, were in 3rd place for CCM, 120th place nationwide.

Huge congratulations to our winners on the day and to all the students who took part, making it a fun and enjoyable morning for everyone.

TY Gaisce Hike

Day 1: Rathdrum – Trooperstown (15km trek: Avonmore Way)

Twenty-three TY students, accompanied by Ms Garde and Mr Cloney, started Monday bright and early, meeting the hiking leaders in Rathdrum village. Following a break at Clara Vale church and grounds about 5km into the walk, they then went through Clara Vale wood and Hayesbridge, where some heard a woodpecker in the woods and saw a fly fisherperson along the banks of the Avonmore River. It was a beautiful sunny day. Back to Baltinglass for the evening where the students, still bursting with energy, went to complete the zip line activities. Settling in for the evening and tired from the day’s activities, everybody stayed in the Baltinglass KWETB centre.

Day 2: Glendasan Valley – Trooperstown (12km trek)

The students began their day in Glendasan Valley on Tuesday morning, and the views here were spectacular. Descending to Glendalough and the Glendalough Hotel, they continued out of Glendalough in the direction of Trooperstown over Paddock Hill. The group was lucky enough to spot Sitka deer on the mountain’s edge.

It was a great group, and the students are to be congratulated on their attitude and behaviour on the trip.

Model Council of the European Union 🇪🇺 🇫🇮

It was with great enthusiasm that senior students, Evan Ferguson, Raphael Carlos Balisi Geoghegan, Viera Karsnakova and Alexi Xanthea Mendez, made their way to the Printworks Conference Centre at Dublin Castle on Friday, 28 March 2025.

The day saw 26 schools from every corner of Ireland, each representing one of the EU member countries, in a bid to negotiate and form a consensus on how Online Safety for young people in Europe should be implemented. Team CCM was tasked with representing the views of Finland.

The debate centred around the wording of the directive, in particular the issue of whether an outright ban for under 16 s was implementable or indeed fair in context of the rights of young people. Evan proposed an amendment to introduce a tiered system of gradual introduction to social media sites to be run parallel to robust educational training for 13–16 year-olds, the GTS, and was delighted to achieve support among his fellow delegates.

While many points are brought to the table during the formal talks, much of the real negotiations take place over the lunch hour as delegates have informal meetings and form alliances.

CCM students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to experience how the EU Council works.

Girls' Football Report

CCM Minor Girls' team played St. Mary's in Arklow Town F.C. this week in a semi-final of the Wicklow/Wexford competition. Captained by Megan Forsyth the girls put in a great effort against a very strong St. Mary's team. Robyn Loughran scored the only goal of the game for CCM when Summer Fitzsimons put a great ball through to the prolific striker. Robyn found herself one-on-one against the current U15s Republic of Ireland minor goalkeeper and struck a powerful shot into the back of the net. Robyn later found herself in the same position and only for the crossbar, she would have scored the goal of the day.

Overall, St. Mary's also had prolific strikers and it was Mary's that progressed to this year's final. Well done to the girls this year on their efforts.

Senior Hurling

CCM: 3-18 - Bunclody/Enniscorthy: 3-17 (CCM win after extra time)

An under-strength CCM team had to battle hard to overcome the challenge of a joint Bunclody/Enniscorthy VS side. With the squad depleted by injuries, the fifteen on the field had to make heroic efforts to eventually secure the victory.

CCM were four points ahead at half time but the Wexford team got back in the game with a goal and a point to level the match. CCM pulled away again only to be brought back to level terms 3-13 to 2-16 at full time. CCM managed to win the first half of extra time scoring four points to one goal and held on in the second half to win the game by the narrowest of margins.

A huge effort from everyone on the pitch was led by captain Darragh Leacey from centre back. Also outstanding in forwards were Eoin Lawlor, Jack Neville, Adam O’Brien and Cillian Czwalina, while Nathan Duffy Gough and John Lynch put in massive work in midfield, not to mention Danny Mc Coy at half back and Ben Currie at corner back.

Overall a fantastic game of hurling and a hard-fought result that puts the lads into a South Leinster final. Thanks to Jack Nolan, Alfie Doyle, Jake O’Connor and Toby Salley for helping out on the day.
