'The Wicklow Careers Fair'
On Wednesday, 20 November, CCM TY students attended 'The Wicklow Careers Fair' organised and hosted by the management, staff & students of Coláiste Chraobh Abhann in Kilcoole. From 10 am to 11am (in the school's sports hall), the students had the opportunity to visit individual information stands and speak with college representatives from a variety of 3rd level and PLC colleges, as well as representatives from a variety of Apprenticeship & Training Schemes such as those offered by 'Jones Engineering', 'The ESB', 'An Garda Siochana', and 'The Irish Defence Forces'. The students also attended two information sessions presented by Ulster University and DCU covering information related to studying in Northern Ireland and information pertaining to 'Courses @ DCU', 'Facilities & Societies @ DCU', & 'INTRA / Work Placement opportunities that are offered as part of study options within DCU'.
The CCM Management, staff and CCM TY students, would like to thank Coláiste Chraobh Abhann for the kind invitation to attend this event at their school.
Board Games
Well done to the Sixth year Senior Prefect team, who organise board games and a variety of activities for our Junior students every Friday during lunch. Well done to all involved.
Think Languages Initiative
On Thursday, 21 November, the TY students of CCM took part in the nationwide Think Languages Festival. Think Languages is a national celebration of languages and cultures. Students enjoyed inspirational task, fun-filled language and dance workshops and competed in the nationwide Think Languages Quiz. It aims to encourage students to choose languages at senior cycle and into third-level education and also fosters a spirit of inclusion and cultural awareness.
Students started off the day with the opening ceremony in the sports hall where they received some language goodies. Here they learned about how languages have helped people in their careers and personal life including interpreters from the EU and stars from Strictly Come Dancing. They then took part in a nationwide quiz on languages. Students learned some interesting facts such as the fact that Japanese like to eat KFC on Christmas Day and that it is a tradition in China to eat apples on Christmas Eve which is supposed to bring you a safe and peaceful New Year. We were delighted to see one of our groups coming third on the leader board. Well done to Michael Bunce, Daniel Clarke and Daniel Bowen. They also got warmed up ahead of their workshops with a little Portuguese and Capoeira dancing.
The second part of the day saw each class complete three out of five workshops which included: Latin Dance, Italian and Cuisine, Polish, Chinese Art and Japanese. Thank you to Ellie Jameson and Caitlin Merrigan of Sixth year who led the dance workshop and taught the students the ‘cha cha’! Thanks to all the teachers who helped to facilitate this workshop. Students then settled into a Japanese movie for the latter part of the day, a relaxing way to finish off a busy day.
The TY students really enjoyed the day and embraced the spirit of the event! Hopefully, it is the first of many Think Languages Day to come!
Junior Boys GAA Leinster Championship
CCM Junior Boys GAA Leinster panel made the long travel to a misty Dunlavin GAA for Round 1 the Leinster Championship to face St. Kevin’s on Wednesday, 13 November. Having previously beaten St. Kevin in last year’s Wicklow Championship A semi-final, CCM knew this would be a tough battle and they would have to be at their best. Scores were hard to come by in the first half for CCM with Cillian Czwalina, Jack Healy, Evan O'Connor and the lively NJ Sinnott raising white flags as St. Kevin’s raced into a nine-point half-time advantage.
After some strong words at half-time to gather themselves, CCM started brightly in the second half with Jack Healy scoring an unstoppable goal and Harry Butler knocking over a fine point, giving CCM a fighting chance in the game. Unfortunately, St. Kevin’s kicked on further themselves, got their revenge for last year’s semi-final and ran out eventual deserved winners.
CCM now face Tyndall College Carlow in their final group game in this competition.
Senior Boys GAA Wicklow A Championship
CCM Senior Boys GAA travelled to Bray Emmetts GAA club to face Presentation College Bray in the first round of the Wicklow A Championship on Friday, 15 November. The first half was a tight affair on the scoreline with the half-time score reading 3 points apiece (Jack O'Leary, Zack Nichols, Max Free). Both teams fought hard for possession of the ball, neither team wanting to lose any challenge or battle.
Pres Bray kicked two points early in the second half but a clever Max Free finish lobbed the keeper and ended in the back of the net. This spurred CCM on, with captain Darragh Leacy kicking two inspirational points quickly after to drive his team-mates on and they never looked back. A further point from wingback, Alfie Doyle, and a chip shot from Harry Butler that could also have ended up in the net sealed the win for CCM on a score line of 1-7 to 1-6 despite a late flurry of points and penalty from Pres Bray.
It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the youthful CCM with every player working their socks off for every ball and eventually reaping the rewards. Special mention to the full back line of Finn Richardson, Conor Coffey, Joe Culleton and keeper, John Lynch, with some fantastic saves and kickouts.
U17 Soccer
Our U17 Junior Boys' soccer team travelled to Wexford CBS for their first league match on Thursday, 14 November. The game began evenly with both sides having decent spells, however the home side took control midway through the first half and scored twice to lead 2-0 at halftime. The lads' heads dropped and, missing some players through sickness and injuries, we made some changes at halftime and rotated to give each player game time. Wexford continued to control the game in the second half and were rewarded for their dominance with more goals.
In the end Wexford CBS won the game well however there was a late consolation goal for CCM with Joel Manyara beating his man and rifling home a great strike from twenty yards.
Athletics
Last Tuesday, 19 November, a group travelled to Avondale House to take part in the Wicklow Post Primary Trail Run. The course was set on the pathways through the grounds. Well done to everyone who took part and special mention to Summer Fitzsimons who won the First year girls’ race and Shane Doyle who placed second overall in the Second year boys’ race.
U19 Basketball
CCM hosted St. Columba last Wednesday, 20 November, in the U19 quarter-final. This was a very fast-paced game from the start, with great rebounding allowing fast breaks for both teams. The first quarter saw CCM give St. Columba a lead of three baskets at the break. In the second quarter, CCM played a much tighter defence, enabling us to pull back into the game. Cameron, Samuel, Matteo and Seth stepped up to the defensive play superbly with Keelan, Jason. Ryan, Rahim and Odion all adding to the pressure. Both teams now had to adjust and this allowed for some fine outside shooting, with both teams hitting a series of three pointers.
In the third quarter the two teams played back and forth, trading offence and defence, neither team allowing time or space on the ball. The quarter ended with a score of 19-26 in favour of St Columba’s. In the final quarter CCM managed to level twice and take the lead twice, but it wasn’t enough for them to win with the match ending 29-34. Both teams displayed offensive and defensive brilliance, and it was an incredible game overall for both sides.
Top Scorer for CCM: S.Hogan #11 (10pts)
U16 Basketball
CCM hosted St. Mary’s for the U16 quarter-final. Both teams settled fast and matched each other positionally on the court. The first quarter scoreline of 14-13 in CCM’s favour showed how little there was between these teams. CCM allowed St Mary’s to take a somewhat comfortable lead in the second quarter, leaving the scoreline at 19-25 going into the third quarter, and everything to play for.
Low scoring from both teams in the third quarter allowed for an exciting fourth and final quarter. CCM dug deep and, with real determination and teamwork, brought us back into the game. Conor, Michal, Noah, Justin, Luke, Charlie worked the court with great composure bring the score at full time level 44 points apiece. The game went to extra time due to the draw which went in St. Mary’s favour ending 4-8 in the three-minute tie breaker, ending this incredible game at 48-52.
Top Scorer for CCM: Michal Jakubowski #4 (14pts)
