TY Trip to Baltinglass

On Tuesday, 12 September, and Thursday, 14 September, TY classes students enjoyed their first trip of the year to Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre for a day filled with activities, fun and challenges! While mixing with new classmates and friends, activities included kayaking, rock climbing, archery, zip lining and orienteering. The students had a great day, and it was an excellent start to the Transition Year programme for all involved.

National Ploughing Championships 2023

On Tuesday, 19 September, our Senior Cycle Agricultural Science, Home Economics and Horticulture students travelled to Ratheniska, Co.Laois, for the National Ploughing Championships. Decked out in their finest wellies, they trudged through the mud to locate various stalls and exhibitors linked with their respective Leaving Cert courses. From organisations such as Bord Bia and Teagasc, to small local businesses showing the importance of small enterprises to our economy, there was much to see. Well done to all the students involved.

Worldskills Ireland and The Irish Times Higher Options

On Thursday, 21 September, all CCM Transition Year students and Leaving Certificate Applied students attended the Worldskills Ireland and the ‘Irish Times Higher Options’ dual careers event in the RDS, Dublin.

At the Worldskills event the CCM students observed over 160 finalists compete in skills-based competitions across 30 live national competition finals. Examples of some of the skills and sectors observed on the day included carpentry, welding, hairdressing, and culinary arts. The students were inspired by the speakers on the ‘Heroes Stage’ as they listened to stories of people already working in a specific area.

At the ‘Educators Zone’, ‘Careers Zone’ and ‘FET Village’, the students were given information about the range of apprenticeships available and how to apply for work experience placements and vacancies in the various sectors. At a number of the information and sectoral stands, students were given the opportunity to gain insight into a particular trade, using virtual reality headsets and various technologies.

At the Higher Options event, at numerous information stands located throughout the RDS, the students spoke to representatives from various third-level institutions from Ireland, the UK, and Europe. They were able to gather information about possible future college options, covering not only third level courses, but also PLC courses in colleges of Further Education, and information about the new Tertiary Degree Programmes which were only launched in recent months. As an added bonus to being able to visit the various information stands, students were also able to attend a number of career talks on a wide range of topics, such as ‘How to choose your career’, co-presented by Minister for Further & Higher Education, Simon Harris, and a panel of keynote speakers.

The students were accompanied to the event by Mr Duffy, LCA Vocational Preparation and Guidance Teacher; Ms Doyle, School Guidance Counsellor; Mr Devlin, Construction Studies Teacher; Ms Jenkinson, TY Tutor and Ms Chambers, TY Subject Teacher.

National FAI Academy Success

Congratulations to Allessio Coppola and Dylan O’Neill (First Year) who recently received invitations to attend the National FAI 2011 Academy in Dublin. This is a great achievement for both boys who recently played together at county level, reaching an All-Ireland Final and the Galway Cup Final.

Junior Hurling

Well done to the CCM Junior Hurlers on a good win over Gaelcholáiste na Mara of Arklow which finished 5-18 to 2-5 on Friday, 15 September. It was a closely-fought contest in the first half with sides level 2-5 apiece at half time. However, CCM began to dominate in the second half with Jack O’Leary scoring some great long-range points. The team put in a great effort with many players making their hurling debuts for CCM. There were some great saves from Josh McCann while John Lynch also prevented a comeback with some great saves in the second half. Thanks to Darragh Leacy and Liam Delaney for acting as umpires and Senan O’Donovan, Eoin Lawlor, and Adam O’Brien for helping out. Many thanks to Rathnew GAA for the use of their facilities. The lads look forward to their next match away to Wexford in the South Leinster Championship.

U16 and U19 Girls' Basketball

The U16 and U19 girls' basketball teams squared off against a very strong St. David's side on Wednesday morning, 20 September. St. David's has many local club players and it really showed in their skills on the court. Both of the CCM teams got off to a slow start but, in their second halves, showed great resilience and grit, never getting the head down and continuing to fight for possession of the ball. On the day, St. David's was the stronger side and took both matches. However, special mention to Millie Phelan and Hannah Brabazon who all scored 3-pointers in their matches which shows great improvement!

Training continues at 8am in the hall every Wednesday for those interested.
