Active & Wellbeing Week
This week we marked Active & wellbeing Week in the school with a range of activities. Every day featured a skipping activity as well as a climb-the-heights task. Fastest 20m sprint trials with laser timing gates took place on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday while Tuesday also saw a penalty shoot-out and tug-of-war competition. On Thursday, all staff and students were invited to a lunchtime Wellbeing Room for snacks and games. The highlight of the week was, of course, the First year Sports Day which took place in glorious sunshine!
First Year Sports Day
Well done to all our First year students who took part in a sports day on Thursday, 9 May. The event was organised by their wonderful senior mentor team and facilitated by the PE department as part of Active & Wellbeing Week.
The sun was shining and there were lots of activities, from tug-of-war to dizzy penalties! A most enjoyable day for all!
Dublin International Literature Festival
After their great performance at the Wrapparound showcase event in Trinity College last week where the students read out their own poems in front of a live audience, the students received some brilliant news when they heard that they were selected as the winning school at the event. As a reward for this great achievement, the students have been asked to perform their poems on stage at the annual Dublin International Literature Festival which takes place in Merrion Square Park in Dublin from 17-24 May 2024. This is one of the largest book festivals in Europe and many top writers will be reading from their work. The festival is an outdoor event with many large circus style tents set up around the park where the readings and shows take place. Our students will be reading from a tent that will host many of the children's and teenage writers appearing. The students attending the event are: Olly Quinn, Mikey Russell, David Marcu, Luke Kennedy, Jan Musiol, Joe Murphy, Finn Fleming, Jayden John and Oisin Rizo. The students will appear at the festival on Wednesday, 22 May, at 11.30. Well done to all involved on this great achievement, including the poet, Colm Keegan, who worked with them on their poems and our librarian, Stephen Doherty, who created the opportunity.
PEXpo
Fifth Year students Aoibhe Mitchell, Jason Doyle and Nathan Reynolds travelled to the PExpo in the National Indoor Arena on Thursday, 2 May, to present their project ‘The impact of studying Leaving Certificate Physical Education on senior cycle students’. Up against projects from all over Ireland, the project was entered into the senior wellbeing category. Their project involved conducting research, analysing data and presenting their findings in the National Arena. On the day, they presented the project and answered questions from the various judges. A highlight of the day was listening to interviews on stage with Ellen Walsh, Irish swimmer, and Shane O’Donoghue, Irish men’s hockey player. Both are past Olympians who will also represent us in Paris this summer at the Olympics. A great experience all round and well done to all three students on their project.
Lourdes Trip 2024
Over the weekend, our Lourdes students held a fundraiser in St. Patrick's Church, Wicklow. Throughout the three masses over the weekend, the students and their teacher, Ms Elaine Lyons, collected money at the church gate and spoke to many parishioners who have previously travelled to Lourdes and even to some locals who will be joining us on our pilgrimage this September. We met Fr Aquinas Duffy PP for the first time, and we wish to thank him for giving us this opportunity to fundraise in the church. A special thanks to the parish community who so generously donated to this very worthy cause. In total, we raised €576.17.
Dave Rudden Visit
The library was thrilled to host author, Dave Rudden, one of Ireland's most successful teen writers, who came to the school on Wednesday, 8 May, to facilitate a series of creative writing workshops for a number of our First and Second year classes. Dave is also a well-known TV writer and has written episodes of Dr Who for the BBC. Getting the students to write an 'imaginary' Netflix TV show, Dave asked the students to 'brainstorm' creative writing ideas based on incidents in their own life. These kind of creative writing sessions are a great complement to the reading that the students do during the year and are a great aid in helping students become better readers.
Ember Graduation
On Thursday, 9 May, the seven members of the Ember leadership team went to DCU for an Ember meet-up and graduation. There were twenty-one schools in attendance and the students had a great day! Archbishop Farrell joined the mass and all of our embers have successfully completed the program. They have learned so much about themselves and working as a team to improve our school! Well done to all and thank you to Ms Hanlon who accompanied the students.
TY Mini Company
A Transition Year module that our students take part in is Enterprise which allows our students the opportunity to set up their own mini company based on an idea that interests them. Kieran Armstrong, Sean Manning, Jack Reid and Zack Nichols came up with the idea of producing a commemorative calendar for Wicklow Rugby Club on the occasion of their 60th anniversary. The calendar contains photos of current teams and players along with some golden oldies that were captured over the years. On Wednesday, 8 May, Kieran, Sean and Jack met with Susan from Wicklow Cancer Support to donate 100 euro from the profits they made on the sales on their calendar. Well done to the four students involved who were accompanied by their teacher, Ms Carol Murphy.

First year Football Success!
CCM: 6-6 - Coláiste Bhríde Carnew: 4-9
The First year boys won their Leinster Shield Final against Carnew on Tuesday, 10 May. The game was played in Carnew in lovely conditions. The boys were comfortable during the first, fine scores form Alex Mernagh, Falim Redmond and Alex Healy after some fine interplay between the forwards. There were some great individual battles all over the field with the two Harrys - Messitt and Bowen - at corner and wing back. By halftime CCM were seven points up and in control of the game.
The second half proved a closer affair with Carnew having a very dominant first ten minutes, and this was reflected on the scoreboard. CCM steadied the ship again and a great break by Alex Mc Kenna from wing half-back resulted in Tommy Morrissey volleying the ball to the back of the net, followed by a few more CCM points. Carnew, however, were not finished and were then awarded a penalty after a foul in the square which they converted. They tagged on two more points from play and one form a free to leave two points in the game. They were awarded another penalty this time, however Jayden Healy, the CCM net minder, was equal to the task and dived to his left to save the penalty. CCM pushed up the field and Alex Healy scored the insurance point to put three between the teams.
Harry Bowen accepted the trophy on behalf of the victorious CCM team. It was just reward for the panel of players who have trained hard all year to achieve this result.
Leinster Track & Field
On Wednesday, 1st May, Day 2 of the East Leinster Track and Field championships took place in Morton Stadium, Santry. There were great performances across the board with CCM students. First year student, James Daly, was pipped into 4th position in the junior 100m final by the smallest margin and followed up with 4th in the junior high jump. In the minor boys 500m, James Connolly finished 2nd in his race and 4th fastest time overall. Raphael Balisi Geoghegan made the senior boys 100m final, finishing 7th. Toby Keating was 7th in the intermediate boys shot put with a new PB. In the final race of the day for CCM, First year student, Ben O’Leary, ran a tactical minor boys 1100m where he finished 2nd overall and secured a spot in the Leinster championships. Ben joins Daniel Mitchell who also secured qualification on Monday last for the Leinster finals. Best of luck to both!
