Forensic Science

Recently all Transition Year students had the opportunity to take part in a Forensic Science workshop. The workshop consisted of two parts, the Biggest Diamond Heist in history and JFK’s Assassination. The Diamond Heist section consisted of learning about a heist that took place in Antwerp, Belgium and students learned how to analyse DNA charts, fingerprint patterns, different types of security alarms and how phone tracking works.

In the second half of the workshop, students learned about the conspiracies surrounding JFK’s assassination and the events prior to that. Students were taught about different types of gun bullets, guns and were given an in-depth analysis of JFK’s assassination.

Both workshops provided a worksheet to be completed and overall it was a very interactive and engaging experience.

Girls’ Minor League Game

Last week the CCM minor soccer team played against the Dominican Secondary School, Wicklow Town, in the last of their qualifying games for the knockout stages of the league. The game was played in CCM and it wasn’t long until Brooke Byrne intercepted a goal kick, to then advance into the opposition box to finish with a powerful drive past their goalkeeper. It was the perfect start for the girls who have grown into a well-established team in the minor age group. Robyn Loughran then calmly slotted home a penalty which put the girls in the driving seat coming up to half time. Much the same in the second half when Robyn scored her second goal of the day and Carly McDonald also got on the score sheet.

Well done to the girls who now progress into the knock stages of the league where they now must play St. David’s of Greystones after the mid-term break.

First Year Boys’ Football Leinster Gaelic Championship

The First year boys had their first outing in the Leinster Championship group games on Friday, 2 February, with a very good win over Scoil Dara, Kilcock in CCM. The bright and dry conditions allowed the CCM boys to play to their strengths from the very beginning with some lovely free flowing football and integrate passing that was very difficult to defend. Time and time again, they unlocked the Kilcock defence and, on many occasions, they came away with scores. After fifteen minutes, the CCM boys were 4-1 to 0-1 ahead and at no stage did they allow Kilcock to get into their rhythm.

By half time CCM had a commanding lead and the mentors were able to ring the changes with all eight substitutes getting game time during the second half. The scoring rate did slow in the second half but the quality of football on show did not.

This young team has trained really hard since September and their team work, discipline, effort and commitment really shines through in all games they have played to date.

First Year Boys’ Gaelic

Rathangan 6-7 CCM 6-4

The First year boys played their second group game on Tuesday, 6 February, in a very wet Rathangan. Both teams took their time getting used to the conditions and presented as two very well -matched teams, with no more than two scores separating them at any stage during the game.

The CCM boys showed very good team work, dedication and discipline throughout the game and, even though they were chasing the game in the second half, they never relented and were only beaten by a goal. Indeed, if they were more prolific in front of goal, the result could easily have gone the other way.

The conditions were testing on both teams amd, when our boys moved the ball quickly, they were able to break down the opponent's defence time and time again. We will train hard and work on a few areas in training over the next few weeks and prepare well for our semi-final in early March.

Leinster Schools Cross Country

Massive congratulations to Third year student, Aaron Fitzsimons, who finished 14th in the Leinster Schools Cross Country on Wednesday, 7 February, in the Phoenix Park. Aaron was in the Intermediate Boys’ race over 4km. He has now qualified for the All-Ireland schools which takes place on the 9th of March. It is eight years since a CCM student has qualified for an All-Ireland final in athletics, with schools’ athletics being so competitive to get through the rounds. This achievement is a testament to the training and hard work Aaron puts in week in, week out. The very best of luck in the Finals!

First and Second Year Girls’ Basketball
The First and Second year girls played CCA in their last game of the basketball league today. The First year girls battled hard throughout their game. CCA managed to get 9 points ahead in the second quarter. CCM drew them back to one point with two minutes to go in a very exciting game. However, CCA scored two lucky baskets at the end to win the game. 28-23 to CCA

The Second year CCM team started very strong. They were winning at half time. However, CCA came back in the second half with a strong finish. They also got two lucky baskets in the final minutes of the game to win. 18-12 to CCA

Well done on a great league. Next year the girls will come back even stronger.
