ARTS WEEK

Last week marked Arts Week in CCM. Every morning, during tutorial, students were asked to solve a riddle to name a specific art movement.

On Tuesday, 21 February, Second year art students took part in a ceramic workshop throughout the day with the ceramic artist Christien Van Bussel. She taught students a range of skills to use when working with clay. Everyone who partook made, decorated, and glazed a ceramic mug. There was great enthusiasm from each group. It was an inspiring experience working with a practising ceramic artist and helped students in preparation for their art CBA.

The Art Department hosted a Post-it Note Exhibition on the theme of 'Our Town'. This involved a whole school art competition with all years welcome to participate. Competition winners will be announced next week!

Every lunchtime, a different activity took place: a collaborative art project for all year groups on Monday; an invitation to all students to watch an episode of RTE's 'This is Art Club' on Tuesday; a mono-printing workshop on Thursday and a marbling workshop on Friday.

Congratulations to the school's Art Department and to all participants on a highly successful and enjoyable Arts Week.

LGBT+ HISTORY MONTH

February is international LGBT+ History month, a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ+ people to society, culture, innovation and history. This year, our students decided to research and present a member of the community in each subject they study at CCM. Each student picked an LGBT+ person who was outstanding in their field, whether that be Business, Biology or Wood Tech. This culminated in a wonderful display on our ground-floor corridor.

Further, we finished up the art competition which started for all our students during Stand Up week in November. We are delighted to announce that our senior winner this year is Erin-Jade Thomson, whose artwork will be permanently displayed in the school. Our junior winner this year is Caoimhe Doherty, who created a lovely piece which is on display in the canteen.

'WRAPPAROUND' CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS

A number of Second year JCSP students will participate in a number of creative writing workshops called 'Wrapparound', which started on Tuesday, 21 February, in the library from 11.20-1.20 and will run each Tuesday for the following six weeks. Wrapparound is a national creative writing event involving schools around the country. Songwriter and poet, Karl Parkinson, will facilitate the sessions. Students will learn how to write songs as well as rap and poetry. By the end of the six weeks, the students will have written their own rap song or poem which they will perform in front of an audience at a showcase event in Trinity College in Dublin in May.

TY LAW

Every Friday, TY students have had the opportunity to engage with a panel of barristers, where they could ask any questions they had about this profession or the legal system in general. It was a very engaging Q&A, where students learned about the different paths they can take and the grants available if they wish to study Law.

ONE GOOD SCHOOL

As part of CCM's One Good School Journey all staff members were invited to attend a Webinar for School Saff on the importance of 'Self Care' in promoting and Supporting Youth Mental Health. This webinar was hosted by Jigsaw on Thursday, 23 February, from 7.30 pm - 8.30 pm.

AUTHOR VISIT

Children's author and Illustrator Oisin McGann visited the library on Wednesday, 22 February, to give a reading to a number of First year English classes. Oisin talked about how he became a writer, encouraged the students to start writing their own stories and also to think about writing as a career choice. Oisin also brought along his easel and drew a selection of illustrations from his books. Visits such as this are a great way of promoting reading and writing among the students as they get to meet the person behind the books they see on a shelf and are encouraged to think about their own creative impulses.

FIRST YEAR BLITZ

The First Year Girls Gaelic Football team took part in a Wicklow Schools' Blitz in Ballinakill on Tuesday, 21 February. They played against Gaelcholáiste na Mara, Dominican College and Woodbrook College. There were brilliant displays from Gráinne Murphy, Brooke Byrne, Ava and Kristen Esmonde and Kate Byrne, with some fantastic scores from Inna Kelly.

JUNIOR GIRLS' GAA

The Junior girls travelled to Dundalk in the quarter-final of the Leinster League on Wednesday, 22 February, against Coláiste Rís. Coláiste Rís started off strong, putting a lot of pressure on the backs but when we got the ball up to our forwards, we started moving well. Scores in the first half came from Millie Phelan, Reece Hughes and Brooke Byrne scoring a lovely goal. Unfortunately, it was not our day, and Coláiste Rís outscored us in the end. This was the girls' last Junior match of the year and they have put in a great effort all year - well done girls! The girls are pictured in their new jerseys which they won as part of the Lidl Schools Serious Support Programme.
